Veteran football coach Mike Hillary Mutebi has been found safe in Kisubi, two days after he was reported missing, bringing relief to his family and the wider football community.
Police confirmed on Monday evening that Mutebi had been located and taken to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel are assessing his condition.
An update from the Uganda Police Force stated that the veteran tactician was discovered in Kisubi and immediately transported for medical attention as doctors evaluate his health.
“Coach Mike Mutebi has been found in Kisubi and is currently receiving medical attention at a hospital, where health personnel are assessing his condition,” read part of the post shared on the police’s official X platform at 7:42 pm.
Mutebi had been reported missing since Saturday evening, March 7, when he was last seen at around 6:30 pm during a Catholic church retreat at Kisubi Beach.
According to family members, he had travelled with fellow church members for the seminar but failed to board the return bus to Kampala. When the group arrived in Kawempe, he could not be accounted for.
His disappearance triggered concern among relatives, colleagues and members of the football fraternity, who circulated appeals for information on social media and through community networks.
Kenneth Robert Mubiru, Mutebi’s brother, earlier said the coach had wandered away from caretakers who had accompanied him to the retreat.
Some sources also indicated Mutebi had faced health challenges in recent months, although family members had not issued an official confirmation about the nature of those concerns.
Police from Entebbe Station had launched an investigation and issued a public appeal for information earlier on Monday before confirming later in the evening that the coach had been found.
Mutebi stands among the most influential football coaches in Uganda. His tenure at Kampala Capital City Authority Football Club delivered three Uganda Premier League titles, two Uganda Cups, four Super Cups and the CECAFA Clubs Cup during a successful five year spell that ended in March 2021.
His last coaching role came at AS Kigali, where he served as head coach until April 2022.
Authorities said Mutebi remains under medical observation as health personnel continue to assess his condition.
