Hoima City Arena: A New Frontier For Ugandan Basketball

The pristine Hoima City Arena

By Daniel Nyeko

The landscape of Ugandan sports infrastructure is undergoing a transformative shift. While the nation’s focus has been fixed on the football credentials of the new Hoima City Stadium for the AFCON 2027 bid, the facility is preparing to make its debut on the international scene on the hardwood.

With Uganda set to host the U18 FIBA Afrobasket Qualifiers later this year, all eyes will be on the Albertine region when the official whistle blows.

While the specific tournament dates remain under wraps, FIBA Africa has earmarked the March to July window for these vital qualifiers.

This waiting period has only heightened the anticipation for what will be a landmark event in the decentralization of elite sports in Uganda. For years, the Lugogo Indoor Arena has been the solitary purse of Ugandan basketball.

Bringing continental competitions to Hoima is a strategic move to tap into a fresh and vibrant sporting atmosphere.

A World Class Multipurpose Ecosystem

Completed ahead of schedule by Turkish firm MS SUMMA, the UGX 500bn complex was designed with a vision of versatile excellence. Beyond the 20,000 seater main stadium, the Hoima City Arena is a masterpiece of modern indoor engineering, ready to host the next generation of stars the moment the calendar is confirmed.

Elite technical standards: The 2,000 seat indoor arena meets rigorous FIBA operational standards, featuring professional grade flooring and lighting. From a consulting perspective, this is a zero variance facility, with everything built to the highest international specification.

Infrastructure synergy: With modern dressing rooms and dedicated medical units, the stadium provides a seamless ecosystem for international delegates.

Why the FIBA U18 Afrobasket matters

Even as we wait for the final schedule, the significance of hosting these qualifiers is beyond reproach.

1. Nurturing local talent: Playing on home soil in a state of the art facility provides young athletes with a psychological edge. It bridges the gap between raw potential and professional execution.

2. The macro economic impact: This event will act as a catalyst for Hoima’s local economy. From hospitality to transport, the tournament will validate the government’s decision to turn the oil city into a regional sports hub.

3. AFCON readiness: Whenever the dates are set, the tournament will serve as a crucial live fire test for the stadium’s logistics and security protocols ahead of next year’s AFCON.

The road ahead

As the Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) finalizes the logistics, the stage is being set for what promises to be a compelling display of young African talent.

As a sports enthusiast, I believe the true success of Hoima City Stadium will be measured by the inspiration it provides to every young Ugandan who can now see a world class path to their professional dreams right in their own backyard.

The rim is set, the floor is polished, and we are simply waiting for the word. Hoima is ready.
