Mutyaba, Miiro Among Five Provisionally Suspended in Kitara–Express Match Fixing Probe

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations has provisionally suspended five individuals as investigations continue into the alleged manipulation of a Uganda Premier League match between Kitara and Express played on December 21, 2024.

In an update released on Thursday March 12, the Investigatory Chamber of the FUFA Ethics and Disciplinary Committee said preliminary findings point to a coordinated attempt to fix the match for betting purposes.

A betting integrity report from FIFA indicated the game had allegedly been fixed with prior knowledge that Express would lose and concede at least five goals.

According to FUFA, the early stage of the investigation suggests that Mike Mutyaba coordinated the alleged scheme with Ivan Katende, who has previously been linked to match fixing investigations in Ugandan football.

The report states that Mutyaba, Katende and Express chief executive Ashraf Miiro allegedly conspired to manipulate the match.

FUFA added that betting accounts connected to Katende reportedly won millions from wagers placed on the fixture through a Tanzanian betting company. The company later blocked the payout after detecting suspected fraud.

Investigators also say two players, goalkeeper Emmanuel Kalyowa and Ashraf Mbazira, were recruited by Mutyaba to carry out the alleged plan on the pitch.

Mutyaba is said to have taken charge of technical decisions on match day while head coach Badru Kaddu was absent.

The governing body confirmed it has involved the Criminal Investigations Directorate in the probe as it continues to gather evidence.

Pending disciplinary proceedings, FUFA has provisionally suspended Mutyaba, Miiro, Kalyowa, Mbazira and Katende from all football related activities.

The federation also warned football stakeholders against associating with any of the individuals under investigation, saying such links could expose them to attempts to corrupt players, coaches or officials to manipulate matches.

FUFA urged anyone with information about match manipulation to report it through its integrity reporting channels as the investigation continues.
