Ugandan Players Make Their Mark Across Europe, Asia and Africa – A Weekend Wrap

Ugandan footballers scattered across Europe, Africa and Asia delivered a mixture of commanding performances, decisive goals and resilient displays over the weekend, as several members of the national team continued to assert their influence for their respective clubs.

Midfielder Ronald Ssekiganda produced the most eye-catching display, scoring and completing the full match as APR FC secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Musanze FC in the Rwandan top flight.

The industrious Ugandan anchored the midfield with composure and authority, capping his performance with a well-taken goal that ensured APR maintained their firm grip at the summit of the league table. Fellow Ugandan Denis Omedi also featured for the Kigali giants during the encounter.

Over in England, defender Toby Sibbick delivered a commanding defensive shift, playing the entire 90 minutes as Burton Albion overcame Northampton Town 2-0 in the EFL League One. Sibbick’s composed distribution and disciplined positioning were central to Burton’s clean sheet.

In Libya, forward Steven Mukwala continued his blistering scoring streak, finding the net as Al Nasr Benghazi defeated Al‑Afriqi Benghazi 2-0 in the Libyan Premier League. Mukwala’s clinical strike marked his third goal in just four matches, underlining the striker’s growing importance to his side’s attacking arsenal.

Meanwhile, centre-back Bevis Mugabi featured prominently for Carlisle United, playing 92 minutes before being substituted late in their narrow 2-1 defeat to Tamworth FC in the EFL League Two.

In East Africa’s fiercely contested Tanzania Premier League, playmaker Allan Okello was heavily involved as Young Africans SC battled to a goalless stalemate against city rivals Azam FC in the pulsating Dar es Salaam derby. Okello’s creativity and vision offered flashes of brilliance in a match dominated by tactical discipline.

Elsewhere in Europe, Alhassan Baba clocked 61 minutes for FCSB as they were held to a 0-0 draw by FC Metaloglobus București in Romania’s Liga I.

In Scotland, opportunities were limited for Ugandan representatives. Forward Rogers Mato remained an unused substitute as Heart of Midlothian FC suffered a slender 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock FC in the Scottish Premiership.

Similarly, striker Uche Ikpeazu made a brief cameo appearance, playing 21 minutes off the bench as Ross County F.C. fell 1-0 to St Johnstone FC.

In the Czech Republic, left-back Aziz Kayondo remained on the bench for the second consecutive match as FC Slovan Liberec played out a 1-1 draw against FK Teplice.

Across Asia, attacking midfielder Melvyn Lorenzen made a late cameo, featuring for just two minutes as Muangthong United edged Uthai Thani FC 1-0 in the Thai League 1.

Elsewhere, striker Calvin Kabuye played the entire match for Kuopion Palloseura as they defeated IFK Mariehamn in a club friendly.

Finally, legendary Ugandan goalkeeper Denis Onyango remained on the bench as South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns thrashed Stade Malien 3-0 in the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League.

While some Ugandan stars enjoyed decisive moments of brilliance, others endured quieter outings, yet collectively the nation’s football ambassadors continue to fly the flag high across the global footballing landscape.
