Kawempe Muslim Ladies moved back to the top of the Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League table with a 2 to 0 win against She Corporate on Matchday 15.
The result also completed a league double for the Valley Warriors over the Sharks this season and strengthened their position as the title race heads into its final stretch.
Kick off at the game was delayed by almost 30 minutes due to a heavy downpour, but the match quickly picked up pace once play began. She Corporate nearly grabbed an early lead in the second minute when Jesca Namanda rattled the crossbar with a powerful strike.
Kawempe responded quickly and took the lead in the ninth minute. Jovia Nakagolo capitalised on a defensive lapse from Lukiya Namubiru before calmly finishing to give the hosts the advantage.
After going ahead, Kawempe tightened up defensively and controlled large spells of the match. Central defenders Nakimera Sharifa and Hadijah Babirye kept Namanda quiet for the remainder of the contest, while the midfield pressed aggressively to stop She Corporate from building attacks.
The visitors tried to respond through Sumayah Komuntale, whose free kick sailed over the bar, but Kawempe goalkeeper Saidat Namwanje handled most of the danger with confidence.
Namwanje produced one of the key moments early in the second half when she denied Rebecca Nakato to maintain Kawempe’s lead.
Kawempe almost doubled their advantage soon after, but Latifa Nakasi saw her effort drift narrowly wide. She Corporate’s chances were dealt a major blow when goalkeeper Molly Naava was sent off for handling the ball outside the penalty area.
The hosts eventually sealed the victory when substitute Kevin Nanyunja finished off a well weighted cross from Nakagolo to make it 2 to 0.
Speaking after the match, Kawempe head coach Ayub Khalifa said the team approached the game knowing victory was essential in the title race.
“We knew we had to win to get back to the top of the table. Like in the first leg, we approached the game wanting to win. It is a good boost for us heading into the coming games.”
Elsewhere on Matchday 15, Makerere University edged She Maroons 1 to 0 at Nsibirwa Ground, while Lady Doves and Amus College played out a goalless draw at Katusabe Ground in Masindi.
