UGANDA PREMIER LEAGUE: Vipers Wary of Complacency Ahead of Visit to UPDF

The roar of ambition echoes loudly at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende as Vipers SC, Uganda’s undisputed football powerhouse, resume their ruthless pursuit of domestic supremacy with a Round of 16 Uganda Cup clash against FUFA Big League side Iganga United.

Brimming with swagger, steel, and an insatiable hunger for silverware, the Venoms arrive as reigning kings of both the Uganda Cup and the Uganda Premier League, an imperious double they clinched in emphatic fashion last season.

Their 2-0 dismantling of KCCA FC in the final was not just a victory, but a statement of dominance that reverberated across the nation’s football landscape.

Fast forward to the present, and Vipers are once again dictating the tempo at the summit of the Uganda Premier League table, sitting pretty on 50 points, four clear of closest challengers Kitara FC. It is a position that reflects not only consistency but a ruthless winning mentality forged under pressure.

Their journey in this year’s Uganda Cup has already offered a chilling glimpse of their destructive potential. A merciless 6-0 annihilation of Pajule Lions at Kitende in the preceding round served as a thunderous warning to any would-be challengers. On that day, Vipers were not merely superior, they were unplayable.

At the heart of this blistering form lies a pair of attacking dynamos in Usama Arafat and Karim Watambala, whose clinical edge and creative brilliance have turned matches into exhibitions. Their synergy, movement, and finishing prowess make them a nightmare for defenses, qualities Iganga United must somehow contain if they are to script a monumental upset.

Yet, the narrative leans heavily in favor of the Venoms. Everything about Vipers, from their tactical discipline to their squad depth, exudes authority.

Still, cup football has its own unpredictable rhythm, and Iganga United will dare to dream, hoping to defy the odds under the bright lights of Kitende. But against a Vipers side this ferocious, this focused, and this frighteningly efficient, belief alone may not be enough.

Elsewhere, the quarterfinal lineup is beginning to take shape, with KCCA FC, NEC FC, and Happy Boys Kagaba already booking their places.
