CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe has delivered a firm response following the CAF Appeal Board’s dramatic ruling on the AFCON Morocco 2025 final, which saw Senegal’s 1-0 victory overturned and the title awarded to hosts Morocco.
The Appeal Board, chaired by an independent judge, ruled that Senegal’s decision to walk off in protest of a stoppage-time penalty breached Articles 82 and 84 of CAF regulations. The disciplinary verdict officially awarded Morocco a 3-0 win, sparking heated debate across the continent.
Dr Motsepe expressed “deep disappointment” at the “unacceptable incidents” that marred Africa’s premier football showcase.
He stressed that CAF’s leadership fully respects the independence of its judicial bodies and reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the game.
“CAF remains absolutely determined to strengthen the integrity and reputation of African football,” Motsepe said, confirming that an Executive Committee meeting has been convened to review disciplinary regulations and introduce stronger deterrent sanctions.
The CAF President also highlighted ongoing reforms to improve officiating standards, including greater investment in referees, VAR teams, and match commissioners to ensure consistency and independence in decision-making.
Meanwhile, the fallout continues. Senegal has announced plans to appeal the ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), while Morocco has welcomed the decision, calling it a fair application of competition rules.
The controversy has reignited debate about discipline, officiating, and governance in African football, with fans and stakeholders awaiting the next chapter in what has become one of AFCON’s most contentious finals.
