UEFA has called Europe’s top leagues to a summer summit to address growing concerns over the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
Referee chiefs from the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1 will meet to discuss restoring VAR to its original purpose: correcting only “clear and obvious” errors.
UEFA’s head of referees, Roberto Rosetti, warned against “microscopic interventions,” stressing that while VAR is effective for objective calls, subjective decisions remain problematic.
Intervention rates vary across leagues, from 0.275 per game in the Premier League to 0.47 in Ligue 1, with the Champions League averaging 0.45.
UEFA hopes the summit will lead to a more consistent, universal approach to VAR and the laws of the game.
