Former Uganda Cranes and SC Villa player Sam Mubiru has raised concerns about what he sees as a decline in natural talent and creativity in modern football, arguing that today’s players fall short of earlier generations.
Mubiru made the remarks while comparing two of Uganda’s most celebrated football figures, Phillip Omondi and Majid Musisi. While acknowledging both as outstanding talents, he singled out Omondi as the superior player due to his exceptional ability and distinctive style.
“If Omondi had played in today’s era, he would be compared to players like Lionel Messi. Unfortunately, many in Uganda don’t fully recognize how great he was,” Mubiru said.
He also pointed to a noticeable drop in fan engagement, contrasting the packed stadiums of the past with the lower attendances seen today. Mubiru attributed part of this decline to poor officiating, which he believes has driven fans away from the game.
“Fans used to fill stadiums because the game was more exciting and competitive. Today, poor refereeing decisions have reduced that passion,” he added.
Mubiru further stressed that football in his era was more intense and entertaining, with a higher level of competitiveness across the board.
During his playing career, Mubiru featured for SC Villa between 1980 and 1987, helping the club secure five league titles. The club remains one of the most successful and historic sides in Ugandan football.
