Three-quarters of Premier League supporters want video assistant referee (VAR) scrapped, according to a Football Supporters’ Association survey of nearly 8,000 fans.
– 90% say VAR has not improved matchdays.
– 91% believe it kills goal celebrations.
– 94% say it makes watching on TV worse.
– 72% doubt it improves refereeing accuracy.
FSA’s Thomas Concannon said VAR “takes away from what football is meant to be.”
The Premier League insists VAR improves decision-making, citing a 96–97% accuracy rate and around 100 correct overturns per season.
Despite fan anger, VAR is unlikely to be scrapped: in 2024, 19 of 20 clubs voted to keep it.
Interestingly, while VAR divides opinion, 93% of fans back goalline technology.
