The Democratic Republic of Congo has declared Wednesday a public holiday after the Leopards qualified for their first World Cup in 52 years.
Axel Tuanzebe’s extra-time strike sealed a 1-0 play-off win over Jamaica, sparking wild celebrations in Kinshasa. “Amidst pain and war, this victory makes us proud,” one fan said.
It is Congo’s first appearance since 1974, when the nation competed as Zaire. The team will face Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan in June’s group stage in the US.
DR Congo becomes the 10th African nation to reach the expanded 2026 finals.
