Uganda Holds Regional Edge Despite Movement Among Neighbours in Latest FIFA Rankings

After months of uncertainty, Uganda Cranes fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief.

The national team won’t be sidelined for as long as previously feared, according to FUFA President Moses Magogo.

Earlier this year, the Cranes’ plans for international friendlies hit a snag.

Matches against Bahrain and Madagascar, scheduled in Turkey, were called off due to safety concerns in the Middle East.

That left fans wondering when the team would next take to the pitch.

The cancellation meant missing out on the March international window, and with Uganda failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a stage they have never graced, the team’s next guaranteed outing was uncertain.

The next confirmed action for the Cranes will come in September 2027, when the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers kick off.

However, as co-hosts alongside Tanzania’s Taifa Stars and Kenya’s Harambee Stars, Uganda is already assured of a place in the tournament, meaning the qualifiers are more about fine-tuning than survival.

Speaking to CBS FM on Wednesday night, Magogo confirmed that the national team will regroup sooner than expected.

Magogo hinted at a June camp: “We are monitoring a couple of players and I think by the time we get to play friendlies in June, we shall maybe introduce to Ugandans the players we shall have identified and agreed,” he said, also addressing ongoing discussions about naturalized players.

The last time the senior squad convened was at the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco earlier this year, making the upcoming June camp highly anticipated by both fans and football insiders.
