Italy’s football federation is in turmoil after president Gabriele Gravina and delegation head Gianluigi Buffon resigned following the national team’s failure to qualify for a third straight World Cup.
The four-time champions lost on penalties to Bosnia-Herzegovina, confirming their absence from the 2026 tournament.
Gravina, who led the FIGC since 2018 and oversaw Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph, announced his departure in Rome.
Buffon, Italy’s 2006 World Cup hero, said it was “an act of responsibility” to step aside. Elections for a new president will be held on 22 June, with Giovanni Malagò among the candidates.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has warned Italy could lose its role as Euro 2032 co-host unless stadium upgrades are delivered.
