Former Tottenham and Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama has heaped praise on Ugandan left-back Mustafa Kizza, calling him one of the best set-piece players he has seen in East Africa, according to Pitchside.
The two players shared the pitch at Major League Soccer side Montreal Impact, and their bond has only grown since their time together in the United States.
Wanyama, who joined Montreal in March 2020 under the management of Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, revealed that Henry had high regard for Kizza even before he arrived.
“Thierry Henry came to me and said there is this boy from Uganda, he really likes him and wants to bring him here. He said he is a special kind,” Wanyama told Pitchside.

“From that moment, I knew Kizza was a big deal. I saw him in training, and we immediately connected. He worked hard, showed what he could do on the pitch, and people loved him. Kizza is my brother, and it was a pleasure playing alongside him.”
Kizza has since moved to Kenya, where he now plays for Nairobi United, while Wanyama retired last week.
The 34-year-old former Celtic midfielder, familiar with other Ugandan stars like legendary goalkeeper Denis Onyango, singled out Kizza for his exceptional qualities.

“Kizza has technique. He can cross from anywhere and create chances from deep in his own half. He is one of the best set-piece players I have seen in East Africa,” Wanyama said.
“I’ve played with many Ugandans including Khalid Aucho, Hassan Wasswa, Tony Mawejje, and Onyango, but Kizza is special.”
Wanyama, alongside East African icons Onyango and Mrisho Ngasa, also featured in the official unveiling of the new CHAN trophy in August last year.
“Onyango is special and has made a name for himself in Africa, but other than him, Kizza really stands out. Aucho is also doing well in midfield,” he added.
The strong connection between Wanyama and Kizza continues off the pitch, with plans reportedly underway for a charity match in Kampala this June.
