KCCA co-head coach Jackson Magera admitted his side paid the price for failing to convert their chances after a surprise 1-0 defeat to Calvary FC in the Uganda Premier League on Saturday.
The Kasasiro Boys dominated much of the contest at Midigo Primary School Ground in Yumbe but were punished in the second half when Lawrence Olaboro headed home the winner from a corner in the 60th minute.
Speaking after the match, Magera said KCCA had controlled possession and created enough opportunities to get a result, but poor finishing cost them.
“We dominated the possession and created the chances, but in football if you don’t take your chances, and the other side take their chances they will hurt you,” Magera told the club’s official website.
“We need to regroup, and prepare for our forthcoming matches, pick the lessons from this and keep our heads high.”
KCCA started brightly and nearly went ahead inside seven minutes when Ahimbisibwe struck the woodwork before seeing the ball fly wide.
The visitors continued to pile on pressure and came close again in the 15th minute when Brain Jjara’s goal-bound strike was deflected for a corner after a neat exchange with Ahimbisibwe.
Calvary goalkeeper Hadji Shukuru proved decisive for the hosts, making a superb save in the 27th minute to deny Saidi Mayanja’s header from a Joel Sserunjogi free-kick.
KCCA had a positive moment in the second half when academy captain Steven Oyirwoth made his senior debut and impressed with a composed display at left-back.
But the game turned on the hour mark when Olaboro rose highest from a corner and headed past goalkeeper Mugolofa to hand the bottom-placed hosts a shock lead.
Magera and the technical bench responded with a series of substitutions, introducing Rogers Mugisha, Mugume, Katenga, Mezui and Ssengendo in search of an equaliser.
Mugisha almost rescued a point in the 77th minute after a brilliant solo run into the box, but Shukuru was again equal to the task.
Despite a late wave of pressure, KCCA could not break through as Calvary held firm for all three points.
The defeat dents KCCA’s title hopes ahead of a crucial clash against Vipers SC on Wednesday, April 29, at the MTN Omondi Stadium.
