The sixth season of the Guinness-backed Butiki League got underway in style over the weekend at Yes Sports Centre in Nsambya, with football fans treated to a mix of local action and English Premier League drama.
Kira College Butiki Old Boys turned up in large numbers for the season opener, many dressed in jerseys of their alumni clubs as well as their favourite Premier League teams, creating a lively atmosphere at the Kampala venue.
Fans were also able to catch the much-anticipated Premier League clash between Arsenal and Newcastle without leaving the grounds, thanks to the Guinness Matchday on Tour experience.
For the first time, the Guinness Matchday truck rolled into the venue, offering what organisers described as the ultimate “football on wheels” experience, with supporters watching the match live on a giant screen.
Arsenal fans were left celebrating after Eberechi Eze’s ninth-minute strike sealed a crucial 1-0 win over Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium.
The victory ended Manchester City’s three-day stay at the top of the Premier League table and moved Arsenal three points clear of their rivals, though Mikel Arteta’s side has played a game more.
Arsenal could extend that advantage further when they host Fulham at the Emirates next weekend, while Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City return to action away to Everton on Monday, May 4.
Speaking at the event, Guinness Brand Manager at Uganda Breweries Limited, Denise Nazzinda, said the company was excited to launch the new Butiki League season with the Matchday on Tour experience.
“As the official beer of the Premier League, Guinness is deliberate about bringing football closer to fans, whether they are in a bar or at a sports ground, we will be there,” Nazzinda said.
She also revealed that Guinness is planning an even bigger football experience for fans at the end of the Premier League season.
“On Sunday, May 24, we will host the 2025/26 Premier League season finale at UMA Show Grounds in Lugogo. The event will bring together the very best of what we have delivered throughout the season. We have a lot planned, including exciting entertainment and a wide range of engaging activities for everyone to enjoy,” she added.
Elsewhere, at Kampala Rugby Club, the Guinness-backed Mwiri League also served up another memorable Matchday Four experience, blending football and cricket action.
In one of the day’s standout football fixtures, Suici FC came from behind to beat Ruga Ruga FC in a hard-fought contest, a result that secured their place in the knockout stages.
