South Africa has pulled out its men’s and women’s hockey teams from the 13th African Games in Accra due to concerns over the substandard facilities and ill-prepared hosts.
The decision came after the International Hockey Federation’s guidelines weren’t met.
The Theodosia Okoh Hockey Pitch, the designated venue, fell short of international standards, prompting South Africa’s Olympic governing body to withdraw.
The South African Olympic Committee expressed disappointment, stating that despite reassurances, the pitches were unsuitable for competition.
Team leader Ms. Patience Shikwambana highlighted logistical inconveniences and safety risks for athletes.
With both teams already qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics, the proximity of the African Games to Paris heightened concerns about potential injuries.
