Uganda’s U17 national team, the Cubs, are heading into the final stretch of their preparations for the TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026, with head coach Laryea Kingston outlining a clear focus on sharpening tactics and building momentum ahead of the tournament kickoff on 13 May 2026.
The squad has already departed for Casablanca, where they will set up a training camp aimed at fine tuning their tactical structure and overall match readiness. The programme includes two key international friendlies, first against Mozambique on 5 May, followed by a test against Mali on 9 May, both expected to offer a serious measure of where the team stands before competition begins.
Kingston has struck a confident tone about the group’s progress, pointing to improved understanding and responsibility within the squad as key signs of development.
‘There is more room for improvement, but from where we are, we have so much confidence in the team. Whatever we ask them to do, they are doing it now as the boys are taking responsibility. They are finding solutions and solving problems on the pitch. For me, we are moving in the right direction.’
With time running down to the tournament, Kingston says the remaining days will be used to study opponents and refine execution, while keeping players physically sharp.
‘We will use the remaining time to assess our opponents and test our approach in the friendly matches. We want the boys to be sharp in the preparatory games and remain fresh for the tournament.’
The technical team will also use the camp to strengthen cohesion and tactical organisation as they work towards peak condition for the competition.
Uganda has been drawn in Group B alongside Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon and DR Congo, setting up a demanding group phase when the tournament gets underway in Morocco.
The Cubs’ build up comes as anticipation grows back home, with the side aiming to translate their preparations into a strong showing on the continental stage under the guidance of the technical team and the broader structure of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations.
