Uganda will host the 17th African Youth Chess Championship (AYCC) from May 14–23 at the Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel, Entebbe. The event brings together Africa’s best young players in categories from Under-8 to Under-18, competing over nine rounds in the Swiss system. Titles at stake include Candidate Master (CM) and FIDE Master (FM).
This marks a milestone for the Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) and reflects the country’s growing capacity to stage international events under the National Sports Act 2023.
Continental Gathering
The AYCC, first held in Cape Town in 2009, has grown into Africa’s largest junior chess tournament. Its alumni include continental champions and Grandmasters.
Host Rotation
The championship rotates across Africa:
– South Africa: 2009, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2024
– Egypt: 2017, 2023
– Zambia: 2011, 2015, 2022
– Kenya: 2018
– Namibia: 2019
– Zimbabwe: 2025
Nations Competing
Confirmed delegations include:
– Uganda: Strong home team with local advantage
– Egypt & South Africa: Traditional powerhouses with top-rated players
– Kenya: Fierce regional rivals
– Others: Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Madagascar, Algeria
Ugandan Spotlight
Leading Uganda’s charge is Women International Master (WIM) Sana Omprakash Kayyar, gold medallist in the Under-18 Girls category at the 2025 AYCC in Zimbabwe and silver winner in Cairo 2023. She is the face of the tournament and will defend her title on home soil.
Governance
The National Council for Sports (NCS), under Section 4(K) of the National Sports Act 2023, has approved and backed the event, ensuring professional standards and government support.
Uganda is set. The board is ready. Entebbe becomes Africa’s chess capital this May.
