Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has been exposed as the driving force behind the club’s spying scandal, with an independent commission confirming he personally authorised missions to watch rival teams in secret.
The 33‑year‑old German admitted approving surveillance of Oxford United to study their formation and Middlesbrough to check on a key player’s fitness.
The commission ruled this was a “contrived and determined plan from the top down” and condemned the use of junior staff pressured into carrying out the spying.
Southampton were expelled from the Championship play‑offs and docked four points for next season. The judgement stressed that Eckert’s authorisation “seriously violated” competition integrity, noting that seeking private tactical information itself created a sporting advantage.
The scandal has left Eckert’s future in doubt, with the Saints’ reputation badly damaged and Middlesbrough reinstated to face Hull City in the play‑off final.
