In the third place playoff at the 13th African Games held in Ghana, Uganda’s national women’s football team, the Queen Cranes, clinched the bronze medal after a dramatic penalty shootout victory against Senegal.
Despite a goalless draw in regular time, Uganda emerged triumphant with a 6-5 victory in the penalty shootout, marking a historic milestone for the team.
Despite facing a setback with a late defeat to Nigeria in the semi-finals which meant they wouldn’t vie for gold, they rallied together to secure bronze against Senegal.
Prior to the semi-finals, Uganda finished in second place with 5 points in Group A, courtesy of two draws and a victory. This solid performance set the stage for their remarkable journey to claim their first-ever silverware on the continent.
Meanwhile, in the highly anticipated final match, Ghana emerged victorious, defeating Nigeria to clinch the gold medal.
