Ronald Rugumayo, who made history as the first Ugandan to successfully make the cut in a DP World Tour event back in February, is competing in this week’s Stella Artois Players Championship at Dainfern Golf Estate on the Sunshine Tour.
While Rugumayo is no stranger to the Sunshine Tour, having competed on the tour previously, his groundbreaking achievement on the global stage garnered widespread attention. His historic moment at the Magical Kenya Open not only captured headlines on the PGA Tour in the United States but also drew coverage from Sky News and earned recognition from top professionals in the golfing world.
In addition to his remarkable feat earlier this year, Rugumayo showcased his talent on the Sunshine Tour last September, making the cut in the Vodacom Origins of Golf Western Cape and securing a tied 42nd finish. He also demonstrated his potential with a runner-up finish on the Blue Label Development Tour last year.
Joining Rugumayo in this week’s tournament are previous champions of the Stella Artois Players Championship, including Jaco Ahlers and Kyle Barker.
Rugumayo started strong with a 2-under 70 on day one and will be aiming to improve upon his performance to secure a spot in this year’s event.
Other notable contenders in the field include Ryan van Velzen, leading the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit, and Robin Williams, leading the Fortress Rookie of the Year standings.
