Switzerland Cruise Past 10-Man Bosnia to Move Closer to Knockout Stage

Switzerland strengthened their 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout-stage ambitions with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, with second-half substitutes Johan Manzambi and Rubén Vargas playing decisive roles in a dominant finish.

The victory moved Murat Yakin’s side onto four points from two Group B matches and left them firmly in control of their qualification hopes, while Bosnia saw their nine-match unbeaten run and six-game draw streak come to an end.

Switzerland started brightly in Los Angeles and controlled the early stages, with Dan Ndoye firing into the side netting before Remo Freuler tested Bosnia’s defence with a long-range effort.

The game remained goalless at half-time, but Switzerland continued to threaten after the restart.

Ndoye nearly produced a spectacular opener with an overhead kick that Nikola Vasilj tipped over the bar, while the goalkeeper also denied Breel Embolo with a crucial save.

Bosnia showed occasional attacking threat, with Amar Dedić forcing Gregor Kobel into action from distance, but Switzerland eventually found the breakthrough after Murat Yakin’s second-half changes transformed the contest.

The introduction of Manzambi, Vargas and Djibril Sow proved decisive. With 15 minutes remaining, Vargas delivered a dangerous cross that Bosnia failed to clear, allowing Manzambi to fire home a first World Cup goal from close range.

Bosnia’s hopes faded further when Tarik Muharemović was shown a red card for bringing down Embolo as the Swiss forward raced through on goal.

Playing against 10 men, Switzerland took full advantage. Vargas scored his first World Cup goal after being set up by Embolo, before combining again with Manzambi, who added his second goal of the match in the final minute of normal time.

Bosnia managed a consolation through Ermin Mahmić’s powerful volley in stoppage time, but Switzerland had the final say when Granit Xhaka converted a late penalty after Sow was fouled in the box.

The result leaves Switzerland on the brink of qualification ahead of their final group match against Canada, while Bosnia face a must-win encounter against Qatar as they attempt to revive their campaign.
