Curaçao goalkeeper Eloy Room produced one of the greatest individual goalkeeping performances in World Cup history as his side held Ecuador to a goalless draw, earning their first-ever point at the tournament and keeping their knockout hopes alive.
Room made a record-breaking 15 saves in a heroic display that frustrated an Ecuador side desperate for victory after struggling for goals throughout their campaign.
Ecuador started aggressively and created the first major opportunity after only three minutes when Enner Valencia raced onto a long ball and forced Room into an outstanding save.
The Curaçao goalkeeper continued to stand tall, denying John Yeboah after a brilliant run and keeping out multiple Ecuador efforts before half-time. Pedro Vite, Gonzalo Plata and Valencia all tested him, but none could find a way past the inspired shot-stopper.
Curaçao offered little attacking threat but remained dangerous on the counter, with Sherel Floranus firing wide in one of their rare openings. Ecuador goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez had a quiet first half as his side dominated possession.
After the break, Ecuador continued to press forward. Moisés Caicedo tested Room from distance, while Plata and Kevin Rodríguez also saw chances denied by the outstanding goalkeeper.
Curaçao almost produced a shock lead when Galíndez made a superb double save to deny Leandro Bacuna and Livano Comenencia, but Ecuador quickly returned to attacking.
Room continued his remarkable performance by denying substitute Nilson Angulo and later saving from another Ecuador attack. Piero Hincapié then missed a golden opportunity, heading over from close range.
Late efforts from Ángelo Preciado and Angulo also failed to beat Room, ensuring Curaçao secured a famous clean sheet and a historic World Cup point.
The result leaves Ecuador’s qualification hopes in danger, with their lack of goals proving costly and a final group match against Germany now likely to decide their fate.
For Curaçao, the achievement marks another historic milestone after conceding seven goals on their World Cup debut.
A victory against Ivory Coast in their final match could send them into the knockout stages and create one of the tournament’s greatest stories.
