Uganda’s own Shamirah Nabadda has been appointed by FIFA as one of the officials for the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024. Nabadda joins a select group of 89 match officials from 45 countries who will play pivotal roles in officiating the Olympic Football Tournaments.
Among the appointed officials are 21 referees, 42 assistant referees, 20 video match officials, and six support referees, with Nabadda entrusted with the crucial role of one of the six support referees.
Nabadda’s journey to this esteemed position has been marked by dedication and talent. She has previously officiated in two editions of the African Women’s Champions League, showcasing her prowess and commitment to the game.
The women’s competition at the Olympics kicks off on July 25, 2024, culminating in the gold medal match at the iconic Parc des Princes in Paris on August 10, 2024. Meanwhile, the men’s tournament will commence a day earlier, with its gold medal match scheduled for August 9, 2024, also at the Parc des Princes.
Preparation and support for the officials will be paramount, with FIFA deploying a team of technical trainers, including referees and video assistant referee (VAR) instructors, along with match analysts, fitness coaches, physiotherapists, and sports scientists. This comprehensive support aims to ensure that the officials are equipped with the best guidance and resources for their crucial roles.
Both the women’s and men’s tournaments will benefit from advanced technology, including goal-line technology and the VAR system, incorporating semi-automated offside technology to aid the referees in making accurate decisions on the field.
Shamirah Nabadda’s inclusion among the Paris Olympics 2024 officials not only reflects her achievement but also a win for Uganda and inclusion within the football community.
