The Uganda Cricket Association has announced that Janet Mbabazi has been promoted to Team Captain for the Victoria Pearls for the upcoming T20 Global Qualifiers.
Mbabazi previously served as the team’s vice-captain since 2018 and now succeeds Consy Aweko. Alongside Mbabazi, Rita Musamali will take over as vice-captain for the T20 Global Qualifiers set to take place in Abu Dhabi from April 19th to May 2nd.
Proscovia Alako makes a return to the Victoria Pearls team replacing Immaculate Nandera in the final squad named for the qualifiers.
Uganda is in Group A, alongside Scotland, Thailand, the USA, and Sri Lanka. While familiar with Scotland and Thailand from previous encounters, Uganda will encounter the USA and Sri Lanka for the first time. The top teams from the group stage to the semifinals and the finalists will secure a place in the 2024 T20 Women’s World Cup in Bangladesh.
The complete squad includes Janet Mbabazi (Captain), Rita Musamali (Vice Captain), Consy Aweko, Kevin Awino, Stephanie Nampiina, Immaculate Nakisuyi, Evelyn Anyipo, Sarah Akiteng, Phionah Khulume, Proscovia Alako, Gloria Obukor, Esther Iloku, Lorna Anyait, and Malissa Ariokot.
As part of the preparations, Uganda will engage in two warm-up fixtures against Vanuatu and UAE to fine-tune their strategies and acclimate to match conditions.
