With only three days remaining until the highly anticipated 2024 Uganda National Open Boxing Championship which commences this Saturday, April 20th, 2024, anticipation is reaching fever pitch.
The event will kick off with official weigh-ins on Saturday followed by the start of action-packed boxing matches on Monday, April 22nd, at the volleyball court in Lugogo. The action will climax on April 26th, 2024, at the NCS Arena in Lugogo.
Boxers from diverse clubs across the nation have been diligently preparing and pushing their boundaries during the preseason, eagerly waiting to showcase their talent and resilience in the ring.
Sula Kamoga, the Vice President of the Uganda Boxing Federation, emphasized the significance of the national open, highlighting its role in providing a pathway to the national team and the prestigious Champions League.
“The national open is pivotal for every club and boxer, serving as one of the highest-level tournaments in the country. Participation in the national open offers a gateway to the national team. Remember, the top two boxers in each weight category qualify for the Champions League,” Kamoga explained.
Regarding the rewards, Kamoga added, “We are fully prepared for the 2024 national opening, with a variety of prizes and awards awaiting the top performers, and clubs. It’s an opportunity not to be missed.”
Nakkazi Michelle, the Competition Manager at the Uganda Boxing Federation, provided further insight into the competition logistics and the participation expected from boxers.
“We are in the final stages of preparations for the national open, set to commence on Saturday, April 20th, 2024, with the weigh-ins at Lugogo volleyball grounds, our traditional starting point. Boxing action will kick off on April 22nd, with the finals culminating on April 27th at the Arena,” Michelle elaborated.
Lukanga Boxing Club are the defending champions for the National Open Boxing Championship with UPDF Boxing Club winning the Elite Category and Cobap Boxing Club emerging best in the Youth Category.
