Newly Elected Uganda Golf Union President Sets Targets for Term

In a bid to drive golf development from the grassroots to the elite level, Uganda Golf Union President, Jackson Were, has outlined ambitious targets for his tenure. Elected earlier this year, Were and his new executive committee were tasked with revolutionizing the sport across the nation.

Speaking to NBS Tee Off, Were emphasized his primary goal.

“My number one priority is to grow the numbers of golf. I want to focus on nurturing junior talent across the country,” he said.

With a vision to foster a thriving youth golfing community, Were aims to provide ample opportunities for young talents to flourish.

Furthermore, Were expressed his intention to bolster the participation of professional players in the sport.

“We want to attract more professional players into the game,” he stated. “These are the individuals who contribute significantly to our improvement. We aim to facilitate numerous tours featuring professional players to enhance the competitiveness and appeal of the sport,” he added.

Acknowledging the importance of inclusivity, Were underscored his commitment to promoting women’s golf during his tenure.

“The ladies’ game is also vital to me,” he affirmed. “We aspire to attract as many women to the sport as possible.”

Were pledged to collaborate closely with the Uganda Ladies Golf Union, extending support to their programs both domestically and on the international stage.

Uganda’s golf calendar is filled with several activities including, the Uganda Golf Open Series, the Katogo Invitational Golf Series, the Victoria Cup, the Challenger’s Open, the Nile Golf Cup, the Mbarara Ladies Classic, and Entebbe Ladies Open, among others.
