Nile Special Rugby Championship Enters Crucial Playoff Stage

With a new play format comprising a round-robin regular season and playoff matchups, the Nile Special Rugby Championship is set for the decisive phase beginning this weekend. The top eight teams will vie for the title, while the bottom four sides will battle for survival.

Round one features record winners Platinum Credit Heathens facing off against Walukuba Barbarians, and Plascon Mongers taking on KCB KOBs. The aggregate winners of these matchups will advance to the semi-finals.

Platinum Credit Heathens (1) vs. Walukuba Barbarians (8)

This playoff clash typically presents either a dominant victory or a surprising upset. In this instance, the Barbarians are eager to assert themselves and establish a prominent position in Ugandan rugby.

Under the guidance of coach Leonard Lubambula, who led them to top-flight promotion last season, the Barbarians have demonstrated readiness to compete against formidable opponents. Their regular-season encounter ended in a closely contested 21-17 result, with Heathens narrowly securing the win.

Flyhalf Gift Wokorach, alongside backline partners Shakim Sembusi and Ivan Bulima, and captain Reuben Kagwisagye are key players for the Barbarians. Meanwhile, Heathens, boasting 16-time record championships, rely on the experience and quality of their squad. Youngster Malcolm Okello, with 86 points to his name, played a pivotal role in their unbeaten regular season. Captain Michael Wokorach, supported by seasoned performers like Scott Oluoch and Charles Uhuru, provides crucial leadership.

Plascon Mongers (5) vs. KCB KOBs (4)

The leadership transition at KOBs, with veteran forward Victor Wadia taking charge, has encountered challenges amid injuries and national team commitments.

With key players such as Adrian Kasito and Pius Ogena unavailable, the team has turned to its youthful roster, led by Joseph Aredo and James Ijongat. Despite these setbacks, a 21-16 victory during the season offers hope for the second most successful team in Ugandan rugby.

Plascon Mongers, buoyed by an impressive season record of eight wins and three losses, rely on the kicking prowess of flyhalf Edgar Kairu and the scoring ability of winger Robin Odrua. Captain Paul Angana and fullback William Lukwago, supported by a robust forward setup, provide a strong foundation for Mongers’ campaign.
