Ralf Rangnick Opts to Remain as Head Coach of Austria, Rejects Bayern Munich

Ralf Rangnick has decided to turn down the opportunity to take over as head coach of Bayern Munich, opting instead to continue leading the Austria men’s national team. The 65-year-old confirmed his decision on Thursday, emphasizing his commitment to Austria and their common goals.

“I am the Austrian team boss with all my heart,” Rangnick stated. “I really enjoy this task and am determined to successfully continue on our chosen path. I would like to expressly emphasize that this is not a rejection of FC Bayern, but rather a decision for my team and our common goals.”

His decision comes after talks with Bayern over succeeding Thomas Tuchel, who is set to leave the Bundesliga side at the end of the season. Despite the allure of coaching one of Germany’s top clubs, Rangnick’s focus remains on leading Austria at the upcoming Euros in Germany.

Austria qualified for the tournament in second place behind Belgium in Group F, securing six wins out of eight matches. This achievement automatically extended Rangnick’s contract with the Austrian Football Association (OFB) through to the 2026 World Cup.

Rangnick’s decision comes as a blow to Bayern Munich, who are still searching for a successor to Tuchel. Supporters had petitioned the club to retain Tuchel, whose contract was due to run until June 2025.

Rangnick’s extensive managerial experience includes stints with Hannover, Schalke, Hoffenheim, and RB Leipzig. He has also had success as a director of football, notably with Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig.
