From All-Africa Gold to World Stage: Kobugabe Sets Sights on World Championships

Ugandan badminton star Husina Kobugabe is back home after a whirlwind adventure that saw her conquer the All-African Games and compete across Europe. Fresh off a historic gold medal win in the women’s doubles alongside partner Gladys Mbabazi, Kobugabe spoke exclusively to NBS Sport about her experiences and future aspirations.

The All-Africa Games victory was a turning point. Kobugabe and Mbabazi electrified the crowd in Ghana, defeating Algeria’s top pair to claim gold. Kobugabe expressed immense gratitude towards Mbabazi, calling her a constant source of motivation and a key factor in their success.

Following this triumph, Kobugabe embarked on a demanding European circuit, competing in prestigious tournaments like the Orleans Masters in France and the Spanish Open. These events provided valuable international exposure as she faced top badminton talent.

The pinnacle of her journey was competing in the Thomas & Uber Cup in China. “Meeting all these international players I’ve always admired was incredible,” she shared. The Ugandan team, the only Black nation present, received exceptional treatment from the organizers, creating a truly memorable experience.

Despite missing out on qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics, Kobugabe remains undeterred. “It’s not the end of the road,” she declared. “I’m young, and I’m already focused on qualifying for the 2028 Olympics.” She acknowledges that missing crucial tournaments in Germany due to funding limitations hampered their Olympic qualification bid.

However, her sights are now firmly set on the World Championships. With the points already accumulated, Kobugabe exudes confidence in securing qualification for this prestigious event.

Beyond the competitive fire, Kobugabe finds solace in surrounding herself with loved ones. Pre-match rituals include listening to the Quran, a source of inner strength. Interestingly, Ghana, with its passionate crowds, has become one of her favorite places to compete.

Ranked second in Africa and 66th in the world alongside Mbabazi, Kobugabe is a rising star. Her unwavering determination and the experience gained from this whirlwind tour will undoubtedly inspire a generation of Ugandan badminton players.
