UPL Finale: Twists and Turns in Table Standings After Penultimate Round

The StarTimes Uganda Premier League delivered another action packed matchday on Tuesday, that saw the league get new leaders, some title contenders drop points, while others kept their pursuit for the title.

SC Villa moved to the summit of the table, when came from behind to defeat URA 2-1 at Wankulukuku, putting them on the brink of their first Uganda Premier League title in 20 years.

The Jogoos came from behind to score 2 late goals courtsey of Umar Lutalo’s 84th-minute equaliser and Kenneth Semakula’s stunning strike from distance in the 87th minute.

Vipers maintained their pursuit of leaders Villa, when they secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Busoga United at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru.

Skipper Milton Karisa and Abdul Nsereko were on the scoresheet for the Venoms, with Bashamu Mugwa grabbing a consolation for the hosts. The win means Vipers go into the final matchday with a chance of claiming the title, sitting just a point behind Villa, and level on points with former League leaders BUL.

Speaking of BUL, the Njeru side, who had the game delayed due to a collapsed goalpost, played out to a goalless draw against Mbarara City at Kakyeka, hence losing the top spot to Villa.

KCCA thrashed Wakiso Giants 4-0 at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo, courtsey of first-half goals from Muhammad Shaban Jagason, Fillbert Obenchan and Haruna Lukwago, Brazilian Joao Gabriel sealed it off to make it four in the second half.

The win moved the Kasasiro Boys to 48 points, but they are six behind leaders Villa, with one game to go, which puts them out of the title race.

Elsewhere, UPDF boosted their survival hopes with a 2-1 win over Maroons. Tebandeke Christopher’s own goal gave Maroons the lead, but Muwadda Mawejje and Faridi Rashid struck in the second half to secure a crucial victory for the Bombo side.

The result leaves UPDF just one point behind Busoga United, who will secure their top-flight status if they can defeat BUL in their final game. UPDF, however, must win and hope Busoga and Gaddafi drop points to secure their survival.
