Parliament Approves Funds for Hoima Stadium Construction

The Parliament of Uganda has given the green light to a supplementary budget totaling Shs288.624 billion, with Shs152 billion earmarked for the construction of the Hoima City Stadium by the National Council of Sports.

This stadium construction is part of the preparations for the much-anticipated 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, which Uganda is set to host alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

Earlier this year, Summa International Construction Company Inc. of Türkiye was selected by the government to undertake the construction of the Stadium.

The company has already embarked on thorough preparations, dedicating the past few months to studying the topography, terrain, and soil characteristics of the site in anticipation of the imminent contract signing.

With funds now secured, Uganda is poised to accelerate progress in stadium construction, bolstering its preparations for hosting AFCON 2027.

The money will be given to the contractor as part of the 30% advance payment, in order to enable the commencement of the construction of the stadium, which is meant to be ready before the deadline of 31st December 2025 as required by Confederation of African Football (CAF). The money will be drawn from the Petroleum Fund.

It remains to be seen when construction will start for Aki Bua stadium, the other venue earmarked by Uganda, in its bid as a potential venue for the AFCON games.
