Ugandan Table Tennis Prodigy to Compete in Three WTT Youth Championships in Europe

Sir Joseph Sebatindira, a nine-year-old table tennis sensation, is set to embark on a remarkable journey to Europe to compete in three World Table Tennis (WTT) Youth Contender Championships. Accompanied by his coach, Alvin Katumba, Joseph will depart on Sunday aboard KLM, beginning a series of competitions that marks a historic milestone for Ugandan table tennis.

Joseph will first compete in Poland from May 22nd to 25th, followed by Sweden from June 5th to 8th, and finally Norway from June 10th to 13th. Between these tournaments, from May 29th to June 4th, Joseph and Alvin will attend the ITTF Rising Stars Training Camp in Halmstad, Sweden.

This camp, organized by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), is a prestigious program that highlights emerging talents. Joseph’s inclusion as both the youngest and the only African player underscores his exceptional skills and rapid progress in the sport.

Joseph’s impressive resume includes three world gold medals: Under-11 titles in Egypt (October 2023) and Qatar (January 2024), and an Under-13 title also clinched in Qatar (January 2024). These victories are historic, marking the first world gold medals for Uganda since the sport was introduced to the country in 1952 by the Brothers of Christian Instruction.

The Uganda Table Tennis Association (UTTA) attributes Joseph’s success to several key factors, including a dedicated focus on youth development, strong club support from Nakasero TT Club, and the influential guidance of Sister Mary Musoke, a three-time Olympian. The combination of committed coaches, quality equipment, and extensive competition experience has also played a crucial role in Joseph’s development.

Joseph’s participation in these European tournaments is a significant moment for African table tennis, as he is the only player from the continent competing at these events. UTTA has called on the entire African continent to support Joseph, showcasing Africa’s potential in the sport and emphasizing the need for better development support.

The progress of Ugandan table tennis has also been bolstered by substantial funding from Parliament and the National Council of Sports (NCS), which has enabled the sport to thrive and produce outstanding results on the global stage. This financial support has been instrumental in providing the necessary resources and opportunities for young talents like Joseph to excel.

Joseph’s journey to Europe not only aims to defend his world titles but also to demonstrate the immense talent and potential within African table tennis. His discipline, hard work, and love for the sport continue to inspire and attract potential sponsors and supporters.
