Exactly 246 days since the title charge began, the StarTimes Uganda Premier League climaxed on Saturday, 18th May 2024.
New champions, SC Villa, were crowned after two decades without a Premier League trophy. Villa’s 2-0 away win over NEC at MTN Omondi Stadium Lugogo secured their 17th title.
Charles Lwanga and Hakim Kiwanuka scored the two crucial goals in the second half to hand Villa their record 17th league title of the final day of the season.
It was a hustle to find space at Lugogo, with fans entering as early as midday before the venue was filled to capacity hours before kick-off.
At Lugogo, the title was delivered by FUFA president Hon. Moses Magogo in a helicopter, multiplying the excitement on ground. The crowning moment was witnessed by notable SC Villa fans among others the Katikkiro of Buganda Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, artiste Eddy Kenzo, former players including Denis Onyango and former coach Milutin Sredojevic Micho.
Apart from the trophy and Shs60m prize money, Jogoos are playing on the continent again as they will represent the country in the CAF Champions League.
Elsewhere, Lawrence Tezikya, Jerome Kirya, and Richard Okello scored in BUL’s 3-0 win over Busoga United to finish second.
At St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende, a brace from skipper Milton Karisa as well as goals by Karim Watambala and Abubakar Lawal sealed a 4-1 victory over Mbarara City FC to finish third.
A Denis Omedi brace and a goal from Paul Mucureezi saw Kitara end their impressive season in fourth place with a 3-0 victory over Gaddafi in Masindi.
KCCA FC and Express finished 5th and 12th respectively, while Gaddafi FC and Busoga United joined Arua Hill SC in the FUFA Big League next season after losses to Kitara and BUL respectively.
A total of 18 goals were scored on the final match day. KCCA FC’s Shaban Muhammed emerged as the league’s top scorer with 17 goals, closely followed by Kitara FC’s Denis Omedi and Isaac Wagoina, both tied at 14 goals.
