Uganda’s Sseninde Lauds CAF Schools Championship for Nurturing Young Talent

The CAF African Schools Football Championship has received high praise from African football development advocate and Ugandan legend Jean Sseninde for its significant role in nurturing young talent across the continent.

Speaking to CAFOnline following the official draw on Sunday evening, Sseninde emphasized the tournament’s unique ability to foster growth and development among young players.

“This championship is a fantastic opportunity for young players to showcase their skills on an international stage. It’s about more than just winning; it’s about growth, learning, and building a solid foundation for the future of African football,” Sseninde stated.

The tournament officially begins on Tuesday, 21 May at Zanzibar’s Amaan Stadium, with the finals scheduled for 25 May in both boys’ and girls’ divisions. Sseninde, alongside Nigerian football legend Daniel Amokachi, highlighted the tournament’s role in exposing young athletes to diverse cultures and playing styles, enriching their experience and fostering the future of African football.

“This competition allows young players to experience a professional level of play, an opportunity many didn’t have before. Now, these young athletes have the chance to seize these opportunities and grow. Such diversity brings different playing styles and cultures together, enriching the experience for everyone involved. This is where the future of African football begins,” Sseninde added.

The Motsepe Foundation’s investment has been pivotal in making the tournament possible, according to Sseninde. The foundation’s support has enabled the creation of initiatives and projects funded by the prize money.

“We have to be thankful for the investment by the Motsepe Foundation. Without their support, these opportunities wouldn’t exist. This investment has opened doors for young players and enabled the creation of initiatives and projects funded by the prize money,” Sseninde noted.

Winners of both the boys’ and girls’ competitions will each receive USD 300,000 in prize money, runners-up will receive USD 200,000, and bronze medalists will take home USD 150,000.

The funds, provided through CAF’s partnership with the Motsepe Foundation, are intended for development projects within schools.
