Ugandan comedian Joseph Opio has been awarded the Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing – Long Form for his docu-series “The World According to Football.”
The series explores how soccer teams and fans in various countries confront global issues through the sport, with each episode focusing on a different nation, including Brazil, the U.S., the U.K., France, and Qatar.
“The World According to Football” is narrated by former Daily Show host Trevor Noah. This project marks the first time Opio and the South African megastar have expanded their artistic collaboration beyond Comedy Central.
In his acceptance speech, Opio expressed gratitude to his family and team for their support and acknowledged the executive producer for providing him the opportunity to stretch his creative muscles beyond comedy writing.
Opio triumphed over notable nominees, including two-time World Champion Carli Lloyd, NBA legend Charles Barkley, and three-time Super Bowl winner Troy Aikman, to win this prestigious award.
