The 2022 Victoria Cup has been postponed until further notice according to a statement issued by the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) last night.
Following a 10-year absence of the tournament due to logistical challenges, the Cup was set for a return this Saturday at Legends rugby grounds.
According to URU, a yet-to-be-determined date later in the year will be considered for the matchup.
The Zimbabwe Rugby Union initially confirmed that they will not be taking part in the tournament in a statement.
The Zimbabwe Rugby Union regrets to inform the nation that the Vicotria Cup game against the Uganda Rugby Cranes scheduled for July 30, 2022, in Kampala has been shelved,” the statement read.
“This is due to circumstances beyond our immediate control. We however remain hopeful that this game will be played at a later date convenient to both Unions, Uganda Rugby and Zimbabwe Rugby.”
“The Zimbabwean Goshawks team stands ready to fulfil the fixture should the variables at play turn out favourable for the Uganda tour to happen,” it continued.
The Union cites circumstances beyond their control as the reason for the delay of the “Victoria” themed tie.
This follows the recent cancellation of this year’s Elgon Cup that was due to be played starting last weekend across two legs between the Rugby Cranes and Kenya Simbas.
Attention now turns to the Rugby Sevens side competing at the ongoing Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
