Tottenham Releases Ryan Sessegnon After Injury-Plagued Tenure

Tottenham Hotspur has confirmed the departure of Ryan Sessegnon after five seasons at the club. The announcement came as part of the club’s retained list released on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, with Sessegnon leaving on a free transfer.

Sessegnon joined Spurs from Fulham in 2019 for a transfer fee of £25 million, arriving as one of England’s most promising young talents. However, his time at Tottenham was marred by persistent hamstring injuries, which significantly limited his playing time. Over five seasons, Sessegnon made only 57 appearances for the club, including just one match in the 2023-24 season due to surgeries on both hamstrings.

Tottenham had the option to extend Sessegnon’s contract for an additional year but decided against it, allowing the 24-year-old to seek new opportunities. This move marks a significant shift as the club aims to rebuild under new management.

In addition to Sessegnon, Tottenham’s retained list confirmed the earlier departures of Eric Dier and Ivan Perisic, who joined Bayern Munich and Hajduk Split on loan in January. Another notable exit is academy graduate Japhet Tanganga, who will leave the club after impressing on loan at Millwall in the Sky Bet Championship.

Meanwhile, Republic of Ireland striker Troy Parrott remains with Tottenham, under contract until 2025. Parrott, who recently scored the winning goal in a friendly against Hungary, ended his season on a high note despite being relegated with Excelsior in the Eredivisie. His strong finish to the season, including a spate of goals, has caught the attention of Spurs’ new management.

The departure of these players signals a period of transition for Tottenham Hotspur as they look to reshape their squad for the upcoming season.
