The Council for East and Central Africa Football (CECAFA) has announced the cancellation of the 2024 Senior Challenge Cup, a prestigious tournament featuring the senior national men’s teams in the region.
The Senior Challenge Cup was scheduled to take place from late June to July 14 this year, marking the opening of the CECAFA calendar.
However, a statement from the CECAFA secretariat confirmed the decision to cancel the event, citing the need to provide players with more time to prepare for the upcoming CECAFA Kagame Cup.
“The CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup 2024 which was meant to open the CECAFA calendar from June 29th to July 14th has been cancelled to give players more time to prepare with their teams ahead of the CECAFA Kagame Cup,” the statement read.
The Kagame Cup is a football competition also organised by CECAFA. It features top football clubs from clubs within East Africa tussling it out for the crown.
It was set to take place shortly after the cancelled Senior Challenge Cup, but by prioritising the Kagame Cup, CECAFA aims to ensure that the players are well-rested and adequately prepared to put on a thrilling display for their respective national teams.
The last edition of the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup was held in 2019, with Uganda emerging victorious after hosting the competition in Kampala.
