The 2024 Masaza Cup Tournament was officially launched by the Katikiro of Buganda, Peter Charles Mayiga, in a ceremony held at Mengo Bulange. This year marks the 20th edition of the prestigious tournament, which features 18 teams and will commence on Saturday, June 22, 2024. The opening match will be hosted in Luwero Kasana, where the defending champions Bulemeezi will face Buluuli.
The Masaza Cup has established itself as a major event, attracting over 300,000 spectators to the games and engaging more than 6 million viewers through television, social media, and radio broadcasts.
Preliminary competitions for the tournament began in January and continued through April at the sub-county level, involving 322 games and 4,325 players. These competitions culminated in June with 81 final matches featuring over 1,000 players, with the successful participants earning the opportunity to compete in the main tournament.
Bulemeezi, the defending champions, underscore the competitive nature of the Masaza Cup. The tournament has been instrumental in the development of many players who have progressed to join national teams and professional clubs.
Notable examples include Kakande Jonah, who moved from Bulemeezi to Sports Club Villa in 2022, and Allan Oyirwoth, who was selected for the national team in 2023 after being named the best player of the year.
During the launch, Katikiro Mayiga highlighted the importance of youth discovering their talents early, noting that many successful individuals identify their abilities while still young and seize opportunities as they arise.
“Over 80% of people who succeed in life discover their talents and abilities when they are still in the youth age brackets. They start at an early age when they are still young, and what is important to young people is the ability to notice an opportunity when it happens, to take the decision, and put the opportunity to use. Those who discover their talents in old age and become successful are few,” said Mayiga.
This year’s tournament will also see the introduction of new technology for player registration and real-time online match result displays, enhancing the experience for both players and fans.
