In a deep and emotional revelation, former Vipers SC head coach Charles Livingstone Mbabazi has opened up about his decade-long struggle with depression, following the tragic passing of his wife.
Mbabazi, who was recently unveiled as the new manager of Mbarara City for his third stint at the club, took to his official Facebook page on Wednesday morning to share a heartfelt message, apologising for his wrong conduct over the years, and revealing the reasons behind his excessive alcohol use, that has tainted his career.
“I want to apologize to any I have offended and wronged in my life, especially the coaches, chairmen of clubs, the fans, and others,” Mbabazi wrote.
“I have been living a life of lies since my wife passed away ten years ago. I have been drinking a lot to forget her, but I have to accept that she died and move on to be a better dad to my children.” He added, in a touching revelation.
The 43-year-old coach has been grieving the loss of his wife who died by suicide by poisoning. Tragically, the incident also affected their children, who fortunately survived.
Mbabazi’s admission has shed light on the profound personal anguish he has endured in the years since, as he has grappled with the devastating loss of his beloved spouse. He thanked everyone who has stood by him throughout his battle.
“This comes from the bottom of my heart to thank anyone who has supported me and given me opportunities to work for them during my condition and during those tough times, and accept me as a new man,” Mbabazi wrote.
The new Mbarara City tactician promised to change for the sake of his family but sought continued support and prayers as he navigated his journey of healing and personal growth.
“It’s not going to be easy, but I am ready for the new challenge.” He said.
“The change or new me, it’s for my family, not anyone else, and I still need your support and prayers during my transformation,” he added.
Mbabazi’s revelation revealed the reasons behind his recent behaviour, which led to his dismissal from Vipers in April after just four months in charge.
The tactician was absent for the team’s critical matches, at a critical part of the season, including a 4-0 victory over Wakiso and a Uganda Cup win against Iganga Young, without prior communication.
After returning for a 1-0 loss to KCCA, he was again absent for subsequent matches against URA and UPDF. Mbabazi then appeared as the team prepared to travel for a match against SC Villa but did not participate in the training session, leading to his eventual sacking.
