Twelve-time and defending champions Uganda Prison Service Athletics Club are gearing up to retain their crown at the upcoming 2024 National Track and Field Championships.
The championships, organised by the Uganda Athletics Federation and the National Council of Sports, will take place tomorrow Friday, June 28th, and Saturday, June 29th, at the Uganda Christian University in Mukono.
The Prison Athletics Club, known for its consistent and dominant performances, is confident of emerging victorious once again.
Team manager Walter Adupa is assured of victory, and attributes the team’s success to rigorous preparations and the identification of talented athletes who are “moulded and trained the ‘prisons way’.”
“On Friday and Saturday, we intend to present a team for this year’s championship. It has always been our duty as a club to defend our titles. We’re known for being defending champions. And what makes us do all this is the preparations we put in place,” Adupa said.
The team will feature a mix of experienced veterans and promising debutants, including the likes of Aaron Adoli and Night Achiru, who have proven their mettle in previous national trials.
Team captain Godfrey Canwengo also expressed confidence in the team’s readiness, stating, “Due to the numerous national trials we’ve been having, we’ve managed to come up with the strongest team.”
“When you go back and look at the results of the national trials, we’ve been out competing. We’ve been in positions one and two. So that gives us a lot of confidence in winning and retaining this championship.” He added.
Coach Janet Achola of the Uganda Prisons Service echoed the team’s preparedness, saying, “We’ve been training, and the training has been going on well. We’ve been going for trials at UCU, which has been going on well with both the young athletes and the old ones, and they are promising to do their best this coming Friday and Saturday.”
With a rich history of 12 national titles and a strong team lineup, the Uganda Prison Service Athletics Club is poised to make a statement and add another championship trophy to their impressive collection.
The 2024 National Track and Field Championships will take place at Uganda Christian University between Friday and Saturday, and NBS Sport will broadcast the competition live starting at 9 am.
