The Kampala Club is hosting the Kampala Club Squash Championship which is happening from July 1 to July 6, 2024. Sponsored by the National Council of Sports, this prestigious event has attracted participation from clubs across Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda, with 90 participants confirmed.
The tournament will feature various categories, including seniors and open competitions. Notable participants include Julia from the Kampala Club, Safina Mugida from the Makerere University Club, Jane Jelly from Kenya, and Jimmy Dalide from Kenya.
The event offers substantial rewards, with the best player set to receive a prize of 5 million UGX. Players have already started arriving, with many expected to return from a concurrent tournament in Mombasa to join the competition.
The tournament was officially opened by Dr. Lucky Mliro, the President of the Squash Federation of Africa.
On the sidelines of the tournament, there will be a referee course starting Tuesday, July 2, which introduces participants to refereeing the game leading to the World Squash Federation level one certification.
In attendance were Kasumba James, the Administrative Secretary from the National Council of Sports, staff members, organizers, and participants from Rwanda, including Emmanuel Amuri. John Bosco Bamwesigire, the club president, expressed his gratitude to the National Council of Sports and the Ministry of Education and Sports for their unwavering support.
“The journey has been long, but it is worth it. We thank the National Council of Sports and the Minister of Education and Sports for their continued sponsorship of squash in Uganda,” said Bamwesigire.
