Uganda achieved significant success at the Uganda Para Badminton International Tournament, which concluded on July 7th. The national team brought home four bronze medals and one silver.
Among the medalists was Sarah Nazziwa, who stood out as the only silver medalist representing Uganda on the international stage.
Sarah, a 30-year-old single mother and the eldest in her family, was not born with a disability. At 17, she began suffering from a spinal cord infection that left her paralyzed from the waist down.
Her life took a transformative turn when she met a group of people with disabilities who introduced her to badminton, a sport that changed her life.
Sarah’s journey is not just a personal triumph but also an inspiration to many. Last year, she clinched a gold medal at the Africa Championship, cementing her status as a role model.
Sarah takes pride in inspiring others who share her interests, even though the distance often makes it difficult for them to meet her in person.
Her story is a powerful testament to resilience and the human spirit, proving that with determination and support, anything is possible.
“I feel so blessed to have made my country proud. The tournament, which spanned several days, started relatively easy but became increasingly tough as it progressed. Despite these difficulties, the Ugandan team emerged victorious, bringing home five medals: one silver and four bronze,” says Sarah.
Sarah also expressed her dissatisfaction with the training, noting that it was not as extensive as it has been for other teams. She mentioned the challenges of transporting themselves to the training grounds, which are very far from them.
Reflecting on her journey since joining the team in 2002, she emphasized the need for new strategies to improve performance in the future.
Her gratitude was a recurring theme in her reflections, as she expressed deep appreciation for her coaches and teammates, whose support was instrumental in her success.
In the wheelchair categories, the medals included a silver in women’s singles and bronze in women’s doubles and men’s doubles.
Sarah Nazziwa’s remarkable performance in the wheelchair one category, winning a silver medal, brought pride to the nation.
