Uganda Cranes midfielder Taddeo Lwanga and his club side APR have advanced to the semifinals of the 2024 CECAFA Kagame Club Championship in Tanzania.
The Rwanda Premier League champions edged El Merriekh 1-0 courtesy of SY Mamadou’s lone goal in the 70th minute at the Azam Complex on Friday night.
It was the second consecutive win for Novic Darko’s team after they also beat Singida Black Stars SC by the same scoreline in the opener of Tuesday.
APR lead proceedings in Group C with maximum points from two games, followed by Uganda Premier League champions SC Villa who have gathered four points.
El Merriekh and Singida are positioned third and fourth with a single point and none, respectively and it is the end of the road for the latter who have lost two games.
The Rwandans are guaranteed at least a second place finish and that will be enough for them to play in the semifinals even if they lose to Villa on Monday in the top of the Group C decider.
Lwanga featured for 67 minutes before he was brought off for the goal scorer while he played fulltime in the opening game.
