FUFA Targeting No.1 Spot in African Football

FUFA President Moses Magogo has outlined an ambitious vision for the future of Ugandan football, saying they aim to make the Pearl of Africa the best footballing nation in the region.

Magogo highlighted the federation’s approach to developing both mass and elite football in Uganda emphasizing the need for patience along the way.

“Certain things must be done at a certain point in time for certain results to be obtained but people need to be patient. Today, we are planting for the fruits that will be enjoyed in over 10 years, but we must start now,” Magogo stated.

“Our goal is to become the best footballing nation on and off the pitch on the continent,” he added.

“Off the pitch we are getting there, we are one of the most organised federations on the continent.”

Uganda is currently ranked 95th in the world and 21st in Africa according to the FIFA World Rankings (July 2024).

Addressing the development of mass football, Magogo noted, “In mass football, we have also identified that we need to target certain areas such as schools and slums. The aim is to look for the talents from wherever corner they may be hiding.”

Magogo added that FUFA’s Technical Master Plan includes comprehensive talent identification and development programs targeting young players across diverse environments.

“When kids are playing there must be someone watching to identify the talent. In elite football, one key thing is talent identification, and so we are going to teach people what to look out for. We are going to train scouts,” Magogo explained.

Further elaborating on the federation’s structural plans, Magogo revealed that the Federation was introducing new roles to enhance talent identification and development.

“We are looking for a head of scouting who will have scouts in provinces, regions, and districts. These scouts will be going to places where mass football is organised to watch the children play,” he explained.

He added that this hierarchical scouting network is designed to systematically uncover and develop football talent nationwide.

FIFA recently launched the Football for Schools program in Uganda, an initiative aimed at improving the sport and talent among pupils and students.
