AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Uganda Cranes to Host Congo at Namboole in September

Uganda Cranes will host Congo Brazzaville in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers on September 9, 2024 at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

The game will be second fixture of the qualifiers, and will kick-off at 7 pm, under the newly-renovated stadium’s floodlights.

This will be the third Uganda Cranes game to be played at the revamped Namboole Stadium, following their World Cup qualifiers against Botswana and Algeria in June, also under the floodlights.

The Uganda Cranes’ clash with Congo Brazzaville will follow their opening qualifier against South Africa, which is scheduled for September 2, 2024 in South Africa.

Uganda is pitted in Group K for the qualification campaign, facing off against South Africa, South Sudan, and Congo Brazzaville.

After the match against Congo, the Cranes will host South Sudan on October 7, before traveling to South Sudan for the return fixture on October 15.

The Cranes’ qualifying campaign will continue with a home game against South Africa on November 11, and will conclude with an away match against Congo Brazzaville on November 19.

It is important to note that all fixtures are subject to change.

Uganda and the Republic of the Congo (Congo Brazzaville) have faced each other four times since 2012.

Uganda has emerged victorious in two of these encounters, scoring a total of seven goals, while Congo Brazzaville has won once, with a total of four goals, and the teams have shared the spoils once.

The draw came in their most recent competitive meeting on November 12, 2017, during the third round of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, which ended 1-1 in Congo.

The Uganda Cranes are eager to secure their place in the AFCON 2025 tournament after missing out on the previous two editions.

The team last qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2017, where they were eliminated in the group stage following narrow 1-0 defeats to Ghana and Egypt, and a 1-1 draw with Mali.

Uganda will however automatically qualify for the 2027 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, since it will be jointly hosting with Kenya and Tanzania.
