The Uganda Baseball and Softball Association has completed a mentorship and capacity building clinic that trained 40 coaches and umpires from the West Nile, Northern and Eastern regions ahead of a busy 2026 baseball calendar.

The clinic was held at Dr. Obote College in Lira City and brought together participants from across the three regions as UBASA continues its efforts to strengthen standards and professionalism within the sport nationwide. The sessions focused on improving technical knowledge, coaching methods and officiating consistency, with attention on practical demands expected during competition.

A key part of the program was preparing officials and coaches for the regional leagues scheduled for May 2026, which are expected to attract increased participation. The clinic also formed part of the build up to the National Secondary Schools Baseball and Softball Tournament due to take place later this year in Gulu.

UBASA believes the Lira clinic has strengthened the technical base needed to support sustained growth of baseball and softball in Uganda, particularly at grassroots and school levels, as the sport continues to expand beyond traditional strongholds.

Uganda has launched the first ever African U15 Women’s Baseball Friendly Championship, marking a historic milestone for the sport on the continent and placing gender equality at the centre of its development agenda.

The tournament officially opened on January 7, 2026 at the Uganda Japan National Baseball Stadium in Gayaza, with the Uganda Baseball and Softball Association reaffirming its commitment to expanding opportunities for young girls in baseball.

UBSA president Ssempa John Bosco said the championship reflects a deliberate push to grow women’s baseball from the grassroots while ensuring equal access to competitive sport.

“This tournament has marked a major step forward for baseball development in Uganda which aligns with our target this year, young girls deserve the same opportunities as their male counterparts to pursue sport at competitive and professional levels”, Ssempa said during the opening ceremony.

Sports stakeholders present at the launch pledged increased investment in grassroots baseball development across the country. These commitments include improving baseball playgrounds, upgrading training facilities, and expanding talent identification programmes aimed at nurturing young players from an early age.

The championship has also attracted praise from regional partners. Head of Women in Baseball at the South Africa Baseball Union, Hayley Scott Maree, described the tournament as a turning point for women’s baseball in Africa. She said the initiative has the potential to inspire more girls and women across the continent to take up the sport and compete at international level.

The four day series got underway with hosts Uganda facing South Africa, setting the tone for a tournament that goes beyond competition and serves as a symbol of progress, inclusion, and opportunity for young female athletes in African baseball.

The U15 Africa Rising Stars Women’s Baseball Friendly Series gets underway today, January 7, at the Uganda Japan National Baseball Stadium in Gayaza, bringing together young female players from Uganda and South Africa for a four day developmental showcase.

The series runs through January 10 and is designed to give emerging athletes early international exposure while sharpening their technical and tactical understanding of the game. It also serves as a platform to strengthen sporting ties between the two countries and assess the progress of youth baseball programs on the continent.

For the hosts, the fixtures offer a timely test of development against strong regional opposition. Uganda’s coaches will use the matches to evaluate player growth, build cohesion within the squad, and identify areas for improvement ahead of future continental engagements.

South Africa, known for its structured youth development approach, arrives aiming to measure its talent pool in a competitive but learning focused environment.

The visiting South African team has already arrived in Uganda ahead of the opening game, with both sides expected to rotate squads and give players meaningful game time across the series.

Beyond the results, the Africa Rising Stars initiative continues to push the growth of women’s baseball in Africa, encouraging wider participation, inspiring young athletes, and laying foundations for the sport’s long term development across the region.
