The road to the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) General Elections in August is taking shape, with the Buganda and Kampala regions holding their delegate elections on Wednesday. The votes marked a significant phase in the nationwide football governance cycle.

In Buganda, Hajji Sekabira Abdul Lukoya secured victory over incumbent Sam Mpima, garnering 27 votes to Mpima’s 20. The win brings an end to Mpima’s tenure as regional representative, and ushers in a new four-year term for Sekabira, who pledged to promote equity and unity in football.

“Football brings us together and we are one, so we shall use this tool to unite us and we shall also make sure we balance the game to everyone,” Sekabira said following his election.

Kampala also witnessed a closely fought race, with Ssemwanga Norman Kabogoza emerging victorious. He polled 13 votes, edging out Sembatya Richard, who managed 10.

In the women’s football category, Kubingi Magret and Dr. Taibu Azah were elected to represent the women’s game at the national level, highlighting the increasing prominence of women’s involvement in football governance.

FUFA Electoral Commission Chairperson, Mathias Bwire, commended the smooth conduct of the regional polls and stressed their significance in the broader electoral calendar.

“The regional and special interest group elections are a key part of the democratic process that leads to the formation of FUFA’s new leadership,” Bwire stated.

More regional and special interest group elections are expected in the coming weeks, as the football community prepares for the decisive FUFA General Election set to take place in Hoima this August.

The FUFA district football elections are set to take place tomorrow Sunday, April 6, 2025, with nearly 100 District Football Associations (DFAs) scheduled to go to the polls across the country.

Out of these, 58 districts have already concluded the process after producing unopposed candidates who have now been officially declared winners.

The remaining 37 districts, including major areas like Kampala, Kiboga, Masaka, Wakiso, Kisoro, and Mbarara, will conduct physical elections under the direct supervision of FUFA Electoral Officers.

The polls mark the opening phase of the FUFA electoral cycle ahead of the 2025 General Elections, and will be held across all eight FUFA regions: Buganda, Kitara, Kampala, North East, Eastern, Western, Northern, and West Nile.

Elections will be held for various leadership positions including DFA Chairman, DFA Delegates to the Regional Assembly, and representatives from Special Interest Groups such as Coaches, Players, Schools, and Referees.

FUFA Electoral Committee Chairperson, Bwire Mathias, confirmed that all logistical and administrative preparations have been finalized ahead of the weekend’s exercise.

“We are ready for the polling exercise starting this weekend,” Bwire said. “Our records indicate that some District Football Associations have unopposed candidates after a thorough verification and nomination process for different positions and will be declared winners. However, elections will only be conducted where there is competition to decide the delegates to the Regional Assembly.”

The district elections are a key component of FUFA’s broader electoral roadmap, which will culminate in the national elections on July 5, 2025, in Hoima.

The build-up to the 2025 FUFA General Elections begins this weekend with district-level football elections scheduled for Sunday, April 6, across Uganda.

Organized by the FUFA Electoral Committee, the district elections represent the first step in a nationwide electoral process that will culminate in the installation of new football leadership, from the grassroots to the national level.

In recent weeks, the nomination process was conducted at various levels, leading to the confirmation of candidates for each contested position. While some candidates will face off at the ballot, others have already secured their positions unopposed.

Each District Football Association (DFA) will elect five officials. In line with FUFA statutes, at least one of those elected must be a woman, in a bid to promote gender inclusion in football governance.

According to the FUFA Electoral Committee, the elections will be conducted across all districts on the same day, with results expected immediately after voting. The regional-level elections will follow in line with the official roadmap.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s polls, FUFA Electoral Committee Chairperson Mathias Bwire emphasized the importance of transparency and inclusivity in the process.

“These elections are a critical step in ensuring credible and representative football leadership across the country. We are committed to running a fair, inclusive, and efficient process at every stage,” said Bwire.

The entire electoral exercise will conclude with the national elections scheduled for July 5, 2025, in Hoima.

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) on Wednesday officially announced the commencement of the electoral process for the District Football Associations (DFAs).

This marks the beginning of the journey to elect new leaders who will manage the affairs of the DFAs and represent them in the 8 Regional Football Associations for the period spanning 2025 to 2029.

The FUFA Electoral Committee released the detailed timeline and procedures for the DFA elections, which are scheduled to take place on April 6, 2025.

This announcement follows earlier preparations, including the appointment and training of Electoral Officers who will support the committee in ensuring a smooth and transparent process.

Key stages of the electoral process include:

Display of Register of Club Officials: The FUFA Electoral Committee has made the register of all Club officials available on the official FUFA website. Eligible individuals have until March 24, 2025, to verify their details and make any necessary updates.

Nomination of Candidates: Aspiring candidates can download nomination forms from the FUFA website between March 25 and March 28, 2025. Completed forms must be submitted by March 30, 2025.

Verification of Candidate Qualifications: The FUFA Electoral Committee will meticulously review the qualifications of all candidates to ensure they meet the stipulated eligibility criteria.

The FUFA Electoral Committee has emphasized its commitment to conducting free and fair elections, in accordance with the FUFA Statutes, Electoral Code, and Electoral Guidelines, all of which are accessible on the FUFA website.

This election is a crucial step in the governance of football at the grassroots level in Uganda, and the outcome will shape the leadership and direction of the DFAs for the next four years.

It is important to note that this announcement pertains to the DFA elections and is a separate process from any potential elections for the presidency of FUFA itself.

The FUFA Electoral Committee has encouraged all eligible individuals and clubs to actively participate in this process to ensure a robust and representative leadership for the District Football Associations.

These officers, pivotal to the electoral process, will assist the FUFA Electoral Committee from the grassroots level to the national stage.

The preparations officially commenced on February 28, 2025, with the FUFA Electoral Committee’s inaugural meeting.

During this session, key resolutions were passed, including the rigorous selection and vetting process for appointing Electoral Officers.

Chairman Mathias Bwiire emphasized the importance of empowering the officers through targeted training.

“By equipping the Electoral Officers, we are laying the foundation for free and fair elections,” he stated.

Training sessions, set to run from March 12 to March 14 across regional associations, will cover critical topics such as voter registration, candidate nominations, and the polling process.
